How sailing in Greece can reboot your mind
Anyone who has travelled knows that immersing yourself in a foreign place is the best way to search your soul. We have experienced many places around the world, but Greece will always hold a special place in our hearts. The blue water sailing conditions, ancient history and vibrant towns are unmatched to any of the other destinations we have visited, and there’s a very good reason why!
The Greek history is one known by many as a story of mystical creatures, war torn cities and luxurious lifestyles in white togas. But what many people don’t understand until they have stepped ashore is that all these beautiful and tragic histories have come together to create a nation of welcoming people and rugged landscapes.
From Ancient Athens when the Greeks fought amoungst themselves, to the great philosophers and oracles that brought thought and reason to the population, the birth of democracy and city planning and even the very climate that brought us the Mediterranean lifestyle we all crave to follow. Greece is the birthplace of many things that set a sailor’s eyes alight.
Immersing yourself in Greece is by far the easiest thing to do. The people are welcoming and friendly, open to share their language and culture with visitors and they love to share the history of their land. Each time I have met someone new I have learnt something about their hometown and why it is in fact the most important town in Greece, or that the history of this town specifically is why Greece was such a grand nation. The love that the people have for their country is infectious!
The dreaminess of the Greecian landscape aside, the blissful experience of sailing is enough to refresh your spirit after a long time stuck inside your home. The breeze in your hair and salty air on your cheeks could be just what the doctor ordered.
Arriving in Lefkas/Lefkada in the Ionian :- it’s time to set off into the sunset on your private yacht. This vast mountainous island has a coast line of 117km dotted with ports, archaeological excavations and a majestic landscape and topography. Located on the north end of Lefkada the main city, Lefkas has maintained dreamy Venetian style architecture through the years and boasts some of Greece’s most idilic churches. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also visit the waterfalls or head out into the lagoon to Meganisi, a small fishing island filled with tradition and olive trees. Following this beautiful coastline south you can discover the beauty of Nidri and Vasiliki. Two smaller port towns bursting with Greek culture.
Fill your soul with sunshine and your stomach with delicious seafood in Sivota, a small fishing village that lies between hundreds of coves and bays with crystal clear water. Both families and couples can find in this corner, a truly unique stay for relaxation.
Follow the ever blue waters and champagne sailing conditions to Ayia Eufimia, formerly the main port of the island of Kefalonia, but after the earthquake of 1953, the town of Sami was developed instead. This is a beautiful and picturesque fishing village that attracts many visitors and sailboats. Beautiful beaches of Efimia, such as Playa Lithovati, are waiting for you and in the path of the Pylarinos ravine you can see other small villages like Agia Dinati and Kalonoros.
These dreamy little villages and towns could go on and on until your mind is drooling at the possibilities of walking their unfilled streets. But don’t just sit there and wander when you could be planning exactly where your feet will take you, or better yet where your sails could guide you.
